sax in the city

Fantasia - the first cd is here: released november 2006:  AMA 0106

A concert with 5 Saxophone players - 5 personalities, who found each other through a mutual fascination of this very special instrument: the saxophone. You can expect a concert bringing you from classical and traditional music to elements from jazz, pop and rock music as well as parts with free improvisations and extraordinary experiments also including vocals, didgeridoo and plastic tubes. This is an uncommon combination of individuality and vivid joint venture which is not an everyday experience. The repertoire is put together of original compositions and arrangements made by these professional musicians coming from Denmark (Aabenraa) and Germany (Flensburg, Hamburg and Hannover).

 Andreas Burckhardt

Lives in Hanover where he is active as a soloist, composer and teacher. He has an outstanding technique based on, circular breathing and surprises with long flowing sound structures and amazing improvisations. He has composed music for ballet and theatre. A side from the saxophone Andreas plays didgeridoo, flute, clarinet and some unusual small instruments like plastic tubes. Contributes with new exciting minimal compositions for the quintet.

 Anselm Simon

Is working in Hamburg where he has a well known reputation among others for his duo playing with pianist Bernd Homann. Anselm’s style can vary from strict classical ideals over klezmer-like clarinet improvisations to the most swinging tenor solos in a super jazzy language. He teaches at the Conservatory and is a well known teaching personality at various saxophone workshops throughout Germany. He is responsible for the form of the free form jazz in the repertoire.

 Jonny Möller

Lives in Schleswig, from where his career has moved through many different rock and top-40 bands, here mentioning Tin Lizzy. In these years he is performing with Mobago, a charming trio calling their music: chamber rock and pop, a very well established trio in northern Germany. Due to his virtuous style, which can play up to all of pop, rock and soul, he has participated in countless studio recordings. He contributes with superb lightening and decorations.

Hanne Roemer

Lives in Aabenraa DK, and celebrated her 30’iest anniversary as a professional saxophone player in 2005. She has been a singer in most of the ensembles that she played in, but is more known as a composer and conductor of various big bands, projects, choirs and ensembles during a versatile career. Contributes with new arrangements and compositions to the repertoire, and can be experienced as the one daring to play on 2 saxophones at the same time.

 Edgar Herzog

Is from Hamburg and treats the deep notes with loving care on baritone as well as bass clarinet, but play almost any of the reeds and flutes. He works freelance in various areas of music like jazz, rock, musicals, chamber- and symphonic music. Edgar has participated in a lot of radio- and TV-recording productions i.e. NDR Big Band and Bob Brookmeyer’s Big Band. As a composer he is a busy and creative contributor to the quintet’s repertoire.

The first concert was played in St. Johannis Kirche in Flensburg the 19th of February 2005.
